Perhaps it’s further proof that billionaires aren’t washing their hands by buying social media platforms when deadlines are approaching.
Billionaire Elon Musk, who is looking to acquire Twitter this week, stopped by the company’s headquarters with a Chinese sink on Wednesday and tweeted, “Enter Twitter HQ. Let it sink!”.
Musk’s $44 billion deal to take Twitter private has a Friday deadline, but the video he posted provided no evidence the acquisition was complete. While not commenting, Twitter has confirmed that Musk’s video tweet is genuine. Musk also changed his Twitter profile to call himself “Chief Twit” and changed his location to his Twitter headquarters in San Francisco.
The flashy video – an old Musk piece – also turned the spotlight on the world’s richest man and the continued social pursuit of his platform.
In early October, the Delaware Court of Chancery ordered a Friday deadline to close the transaction. It’s the latest step in Musk’s epic battle to pull back after signing a deal to buy Twitter, which sued Tesla’s CEO and forced him to complete the deal. If both sides fail to meet Friday’s deadline, the next step could be his trial in November.
Pepperdine University law professor Robert Anderson said he fully expects the deal to close before Friday’s deadline, but Musk’s video doesn’t show much content. He said, “I don’t see anything out of the ordinary about it, except that he brought a sink.” Musk is scheduled to visit Twitter this week and return on Friday when the deal is completed.
His apparent excitement when visiting Twitter’s headquarters contrasted with previous proposals to turn the building into a “homeless shelter.”
The Washington Post told potential investors last week that Musk would lay off three of his quarters of his 7,500 employees when he became the owner of the company. He reportedly said he had a plan. The newspaper cited documents and unnamed sources familiar with the advice. Hours after posting the Synch video, Musk tweeted, “Met so many cool people on Twitter today.” He declined to provide details.
