Elon Musk unbans many controversial Twitter accounts, but says nothing about Trump yet

Elon Musk said on Friday that Twitter plans to restore several controversial accounts that were previously banned or suspended, but the company has yet to make a decision on former President Donald Trump’s account.

The announcement followed a tweet in which Musk attempted to clarify what the platform’s content moderation policy would look like under his leadership.

“New Twitter policy is freedom of speech, not freedom of reach. Negative/hate tweets will be max deboosted & demonetized, so no ads or other revenue to Twitter,” Musk said in the tweet, echoing an approach that is something of an industry standard.

Musk said it would restore accounts of both controversial Canadian podcaster Jordan Peterson and right-wing satirical site Babylon Bee, which were previously banned from the platform. He added that comedian Kathy Griffin, who was suspended from the platform earlier this month for impersonating a mask, will have her account reinstated.
