Surprisingly, researchers have discovered an ancient underwater volcano brimming with life that was presumed to be extinct.
Researchers are astonished by the discovery of a dormant ancient volcano concealed beneath enormous egg formations.
Initially seeking a supposedly dormant volcano in the frigid waters of the Canadian seas, scientists anticipated locating a quiescent mound. Yet, upon reaching the mound situated off Canada’s Pacific coastline, led by marine biologist Dr. Cherisse Du Preez, they were astonished to find it emitting warm water.
The expulsion of mineral-rich fluid from the underwater mountain created an environment where deep-sea creatures could thrive. Adding to the intrigue, scientists were astounded to discover sizable eggs scattered across the summit.
Later on, it was revealed that the culprit responsible for the egg-laying was a marine creature known as the Pacific white skate.
Throughout their two-week expedition, scientists observed this creature maneuvering among the fronds, depositing its eggs.
Notably, these beings share relations with sharks and rays, exhibiting a unique behavior of laying rectangular eggs, as explained by the expedition leader.
Dr. Du Preez also noted their familiar nickname as ‘mermaid purses,’ owing to their resemblance to small handbags.
In sharing her team’s discoveries, the scientist conveyed to Live Science, “This location is truly exceptional atop an already extraordinary site. The only prior discovery of a Pacific white skate nursery was in the Galápagos, with just a dozen or so eggs recorded.”
Elaborating further, she noted that the volcano was abundantly covered with eggs, each approximately 1.5 feet (0.5 meters) in diameter. These eggs can take up to four years to hatch and mature into fully developed adults.
Dr. Du Preez highlighted, “The presence of warm water likely accelerates the eggs’ gestation period, leading to a higher success rate in producing juveniles.”
The elevated plateau of the seamount forms an exquisite coral haven, serving as a secure haven for young marine life before they venture into the depths—an advantageous situation for all involved.
Regrettably, this egg-laden underwater mountain lacks protection and faces jeopardy due to fishing operations.
Nevertheless, subsequent to uncovering this volcanic nurturing ground, the research team is committed to continual surveillance of the seamount.
A video divulging the team’s revelations has been posted on YouTube subsequent to the culmination of their involvement in the United Nations Ocean Decade.
In the three-minute footage, Dr. Du Preez remarked, “Our expedition was unparalleled. The revelations we encountered and our personal interactions with deep-sea creatures have left us profoundly moved.”
